JCU: Oral cancer warning

Did you know that oral cancer (cancer in or around the mouth) is a serious and potentially deadly disease that affects a rising number of Queenslanders each year? A recent JCU: James Cook University, Australia study analysing Oral Cancer in Queensland highlights a concerning rise in the number of cases and deaths from oral cancer in Queensland, despite advances in treatment.

As dental professionals, we encourage you to take steps to reduce your risk of oral cancer, such as quitting smoking and limiting alcohol consumption, maintaining a healthy diet and good oral hygiene, and scheduling regular dental check-ups.

If you have any concerns about oral cancer or notice any unusual symptoms in your mouth, such as persistent sores or swelling, don't hesitate to speak with your dental practitioner and your doctor. Maintaining a routine annual dental check up helps you keep your mouth healthy and is the best way of screening for any abnormalities and concerns in the mouth – regardless of whether you have all, some or none of your natural teeth remaining.
