Could a denture reline improve the fit of my denture?

If a dental prosthesis doesn't fit as comfortably as it used to, it may be time to talk to your dental practitioner about relining your denture.

Changes in the Underlying Bone

Healthy teeth help maintain the soft tissues (gums) in your mouth and the bony architecture of the jaws. Once you have adult teeth removed, the bone and soft tissues can shift. Dentures are designed and custom fitted to minimise further changes to the bone and oral tissue.

Over time, the gums that support the denture may undergo more changes leading to an improper fit of the denture. Improperly fitting dentures may lead to irritation of the gums and may also trap food and plaque. These problems can make a denture uncomfortable and difficult to use.

Another common cause for improperly fitting dentures is dry mouth. Saliva plays a very important role in helping dentures to stay in place so that they feel stable and secure.

Changes in the Denture

Dentures can also wear out after many years of daily use. Dentures are made from materials that include acrylic, porcelain or a hard plastic polymer. Natural wear and tear from bite force can cause the denture itself to wear, both on the white tooth surface area and on the pink tissue-bearing areas. Pressure over time can lead to cracks or fractures.

Relining Dentures

Relining dentures adds material to the inner base that fits to your gums, to conform to any changes in the underlying hard and soft tissue in your mouth.
